what gear should i have?
mask
Finding a mask that fits your face, doesn’t leak, and is comfortable over an extended period of time in the water is the key to successful snorkeling. Silicone masks are much better fitting and longer lasting than other models. They are available in a variety of sizes to fit different faces!
snorkel
Your second piece of gear is the snorkel. How easy it is to clear is the primary feature to consider. Some snorkels are “dry” designs, meaning they don’t get water in them!
fins
Your fins are important! You are not going to see very much without wearing fins. That’s why fish have fins, and we’ve got feet! Fins come in full-foot models, meaning they have individual-sized foot pockets. They are also available in adjustable back strap designs which fit several foot sizes. The length of the blade is important for adequate propulsion.
snorkeling vest
If you are not a strong swimmer, or you are going to spend a good deal of time in the water, some sort of flotation device is an excellent idea. A snorkeling vest works well because it’s lightweight, simple to use, very packable, and affordable. A wetsuit will provide additional flotation if you choose not to wear a vest.
